Meaning: Logistics refers to the skill and discipline engaged in the administration and control of the way in which the flow of goods, services, information and related resources takes place. 

Definition: “Logistics is the process of planning, implementing and controlling the efficient, cost effective flow and storage of raw material, finished goods, work in progress and other related information from the point of origin to the point of consumption.

Meaning And definition OF Logistics Management 

Meaning: Logistics management refers to the process of planning, implementing and controlling the efficient and effective flow and reverse flow and storage of goods and services at the point of origin. Definition: “ Management of the activities of transporting goods to customers or to places where they are bought or sold, known as Logistics management."

• Order Processing: Order Processing refers to the process of receiving and delivering information of sales orders. It has three major functions: 1. order entry . 2. order handling. 3.Order delivery. 
• Inventory Management: Inventory Management refers to a process of managing the stock or inventory of industry at factory place through different techniques. For example: ABC Analysis, VED Analysis etc.
 • Warehousing: Warehousing means to store goods at a place until their delivery to the final customer or end user. Warehouse may be of any type: 1. public warehouse 2. private warehouse 3. bonded warehouse etc. 
Material Handling: The physical management and handling of goods is known as Material Handling. Following two methods are mainly used in material handling : 1. Unit Loading 2. Containerisation.
• Transportation: Transportation means the action of transporting someone or something or a process of being transported. It includes carrying the goods and services one place to another. 
Customer Service: Customer service standards refers to the different levels of services as per the varying needs of different customers. Every manufacturer or service provider offers a set of after sales services to their customers.

• Smooth flow of goods: It make sure that the flow of goods such as raw material, work in progress and finished goods should be smooth. 
• Movement of goods: Logistics always deals with physical movement of the goods. The efficient and effective physical movement of the tangible product will speak about the intangible service associated with the product.
 • Integrated Action: logistics is an integrated process of information handling, demand forecasting, material handling, customer services, warehousing and transporting. 
• Fulfilling customer expectations: Logistics exists to satisfy customer expectations and requirements by facilitating relevant manufacturing and marketing operations. 
• Customer service: An efficient logistics management can help in improving the level of customer services by developing an effective system of warehousing, quick and economic transportation. • Storage of goods: Through efficient logistics management, a product is supplied to customers as and when they require it.
